Charlie was born in Avon to Irvin Richard "Dick" Sr. (1906 – 1980) and Beula Bell (Barker) Muston (1911 – 1982) and was a 1955 graduate of Avon High School. He was class president and married the class vice president, Harriet Kepner (1937 - ) in 1956. Charlie was an outstanding tennis player in high school and made a career teaching high school mathematics and coaching sports. Charlie received the Sagamore of the Wabash in 1996.
